The first chapter of the textbook "Public speaking: the evolving art" talks about public speaking and its evolution over time. From the ancient romans and greeks to the modern day digital age. These chapters focused and emphasized on the uses of public speaking, to inform, persuade, or entertain an audience. It also focuses on the impact of technology on public speaking and how it has evolved the original idea of speech giving. This presentation also touches on how to become a better listener and speaker. These chapters were about building your confidence as a public speaker. These chapters helped me understand different strategies to build my confidence. They made sure to discuss anxiety during public speaking and touched on different techniques to manage that nervousness. Truly understanding your audience was a very important point i retained from this presentation, these chapters emphasized the need to adapt your topic to fit your audience for a more effective outcome. My group made sure to clearly explain and portray what the chapters talked about.
Group two discussed the process of selecting a topic for your speech and the importance of choosing the right topic, and properly formulating a purpose to guide your speech. They also touched on how thorough research gives credibility to a speech and provided strategies for how to gather information from different reliable resources. An important note i made was to always use proper citations and to avoid plagiarism. These chapters also talked about how to persuade or inform your topic to an audience effectively through your speech. They mentioned using materials like statistics, examples, etc. in order to support your ideas. This group mentioned how being organized is very important for the flow of your speech. Their presentation also discussed the components of a speech outline (which is like an essay outline) I really liked how organized this group was and the information they provided was really helpful for the planning part of a speech.
Group three talked about the introductions and conclusions of a speech. They taught us different techniques for hooking the audience at the very beginning, like using anecdotes or questions, and effectively closing a speech. An important point made in this presentation that i found interesting was when they mentioned to provide a call to action when closing your speech because it would be impactful. They also discussed the type of language to shape the audiences idea of your message. They talked about the word choice and structure of your speech to effectively get your message across. These chapters also touched on how important visuals are in understanding a topic or retention of information, but to be sure that the visuals are adding to your presentation not taking away or distracting from them. An important point that was made was that consistency is key during a speech or presentation. The group concluded with information on how to properly deliver your speech to an audience. They covered things like your tone, gestures, eye contact, and even posture when delivering a speech. Throughout this whole book they mention practice, it discusses how important practicing and being prepared is. I really enjoyed this groups presentation, i believe they were strong with their points and their information made it really engaging and easy to pay attention. The information they provided will be extremely helpful when planning and organizing your speech as well as properly delivering.
The last group discussed informative speeches which aim to educate and inform an audience. they discussed the different characteristics of informative speaking like clarity and accuracy. they also touched on the different types of informative speeches like definitions, descriptions, explanations, and demonstrations. This group also talked about persuasive speaking which seeks to influence an audiences different beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors. They effectively taught me the two main types of persuasive speeches which are practical persuasion and issue-based persuasion. They talk about the the different uses of logical reasoning, emotional appeals, and ethical considerations in making and forming persuasive arguments. These chapters dictated that a strong argument is the foundation of any speech. and talks about the components of argumentations including claims, evidence and warrants. They closed their presentation by focusing on speech delivery at different occasions. They mentioned the characteristics of special occasions speeches, like eulogies, toast, and commemorations, which differ from regular speech givings because they are sensitive and emotional occasions. This group did a great job with their presentation and i will ensure to integrate the information they provided when delivering my speeches in the future.
This public speaking assignment allowed me to truly learn the book without having to spend all semester reading it. I appreciated how the assignment allowed me and my fellow peers to teach each other the material through a speech allowing us to experience the true art of speech giving. This assignment made me realize that i liked this kind of teaching which gave us some freedom while still staying in the curriculum. I believe every group did a wonderful job in teaching us different parts of speech giving and effectively teaching us how to deal with things from speech anxiety to how to properly deliver a speech.
